Denture Care:
Whether you are a first timer to dentures or have been wearing dentures for many years caring for your dentures is vitally important. If you look after your full dentures and partial dentures properly they will look after you for many years to come!!
Many people don’t realise that if their dentures are not kept in tip top condition, and not cleaned and looked after properly or if there is any debris on the fitting surface the dentures will become loose. Their fit and suction will be lost and they will become very uncomfortable and a new set of dentures will be needed.
Caring for your dentures:
- Remove and rinse your dentures after eating and handle them carefully. Fill the sink with water so if you accidentally drop your dentures the water will cushion the blow and stop breakages.
- Clean your mouth with a soft toothbrush and use a good mouthwash.
- Brush your dentures daily. If you are using a denture adhesive use the recommended solvent to remove the glue because if left the glue can become hard and alter the fitting surface of the denture causing changes to the fitting surface. This will result in a very poor fit and soreness.
- Soak your dentures in a denture bath with a sterilising tablet for a few hours to dissolve any food debris and keep the dentures clean, fresh and free from bacteria.
If the dentures become loose visit sMiles Better Dental and see our dental technician before it’s too late, as loose dentures damage the bone and cause resorption. A simple reline and your dentures will fit perfectly again and this can be sorted in a few days.
If you ever have to leave your dentures out of your mouth for more than a few minutes leave them in water. Dentures left out in the air dry out and become brittle and lose their properties.
Never use very hot water to clean your dentures. This can warp your dentures and if added to a denture tablet can fade your dentures very fast. Remember the golden rule. If the water is too hot for your hands it’s too hot for your dentures! Call us today on 0161 796 2404 for help with all your denture problems!
